From Waitlist to Workflow: Onboarding Lessons
When we launched Synapse's private beta, we thought our product was self-explanatory. We were wrong.
Users would sign up, connect a data source, and then... stare at an empty input box. Activation rates were embarrassingly low.
Mistake 1: No guided first query
We assumed users knew what to ask. They didn't. The fix: the first time a user opens Synapse, we show three suggested queries based on the data sources they've connected. Click one, see a result, feel the magic.
Mistake 2: Too much setup upfront
Our original onboarding asked users to connect at least one data source before they could try anything. This was a conversion killer. The fix: we built a "demo mode" with a synthetic dataset. Users see results in 30 seconds without connecting anything.
Mistake 3: No celebration of the first result
The first time Synapse answers a query correctly is a peak moment — and we were wasting it with a plain text response. The fix: we added a subtle animation and a prompt to share the result or save it as a dashboard.
After these changes, median time to first value dropped from 12 minutes to 4 minutes, and 7-day retention improved by 34%.
The lesson: your onboarding is not a tutorial. It's a product experience. Invest in it like one.
